UTV Accident in Greene Co. Leaves 1 Dead, 3 Injured

HV Newswire

MAPLECREST, N.Y. — A 12-year-old was killed and a 10-year-old critically injured Saturday when a utility task vehicle (UTV) carrying four youth passengers crashed and overturned on a private gravel driveway in Greene County, Greene County Sheriff’s Office NY said in a news release.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident in the area of 84 County Route 56 in Maplecrest. According to a preliminary investigation, four youths aged 10 to 14 were riding in the vehicle when it veered off the left side of the driveway, struck a boulder, and rolled onto its passenger side, throwing all four occupants.

None of the children were wearing seatbelts or helmets at the time of the crash, officials said.

The 12-year-old and 10-year-old, who were both seated on the passenger side, became pinned underneath the overturned UTV. A neighbor used his truck to pull the vehicle off the trapped children before emergency personnel arrived.

Both children were airlifted to Albany Medical Center, where the 12-year-old was pronounced dead. The 10-year-old remained in critical condition Saturday.

The 14-year-old driver and an 11-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries and received treatment at the scene from emergency medical services.

Multiple agencies assisted the Sheriff’s Office at the scene, including the Hensonville Fire Department, Windham Fire Department, Ashland Ambulance, Windham Ambulance, Greene County Paramedics, LifeNet of New York, Windham Police Department, Greene County Emergency Services, and the New York State Police.

Authorities said the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
